Gray and White Kitchen Makeover
by Megan of  LoveLee Homemaker

My name is Megan and my husband and I are first-time homeowners. We bought our house three years ago and have been slowly updating it. The previous homeowners had updated the kitchen but chose colors and products that weren’t our taste. Everything seemed to be the same orange-y hue which made the kitchen seem dark and heavy.  Here’s the before:

And here’s the after:

This summer my husband had the semester off from law school, so he seized the opporunity to tackle the kitchen makeover. Since the cabinets were somewhat new and in great shape, we decided to paint them. I really liked the look of two-tone cabinets so we went with Muslin White (Glidden) for the uppers and Pencil Point (Behr) for the lowers.

My husband disassembled all the cabinets- labeling each piece of trim and door. After sanding every piece and all cabinet bases, he wiped them down with a de-glosser to remove any grease or dirt. Next came a layer of primer, followed by 2-3 coats of the satin finish paint color. It was a long process but a necessary one to withstand the kitchen’s constant use. We decided to go with a solid color Corian countertop to compliment the large patterned backsplash that we continued all the way to the ceiling. The full wall of tile really makes it an accent wall that can be seen all the way into the living room. Lastly, we had hardwood floors put in to really warm up the space. The entire kitchen makeover took about 6 weeks to complete since my husband did most of the work himself.

We are so please with how everything turned out.  The kitchen is so light, bright and airy now.  I still find myself admiring the room!

A few final details for you:
  • We used Benjamin Moore Advance finish coat on cabinets (made specifically for cabinets).
  • Our countertops are
LG High Max from Home Depot.
  • The backsplash is Hex Milk tile from The Tile Shop.
  • The floors were purchased/put in by a local business.

  1. I am a big fan of white kitchens. I painted my cabinets years ago and added white subway tile for the backsplash. As I touch up the paint every couple years or so, I’ve considered painting one set of lower cabinets gray, too. You did a beautiful job. I also think a bit part of it is the inclusion of so much great texture — like your matchstick blinds, which I have, too. Isn’t it going to be fun to bake cookies here soon?

    Thanks for sharing.

  2. I am using the same backsplash in my kitchen remodel. Can you tell me what color grout you used? It turned out great!

  3. Megan…LOVE your kitchen. This is the color scheme that I am working on right now, even down to having already planned the white uppers and dk gray lowers. Are you saying that after painting with the Glidden and Behr paints, you topped them off with Benjamin Moore Advance finish coat? My paints are the builder grade, I would guess, laminate cabinets. I’m going to try to paint them. I’ve been reading up and many say you can. I know there is a “process” to do it and hoping I have it all down. Beautiful kitchen.
