6 Tips for a Simple and Dreamy White Bedroom

1. Start Simple — And Stay There!

So often, we start out designing a bedroom space with simplicity and by the time we’ve fit in all of our wants, style choices, and necessities, the space is cluttered and not simple or relaxing anymore! Decide on the few things that you want/need in the room, and banish the rest. This means having minimal furnishings, only a few wall decoration, and simple window coverings. Give the simply dressed windows some style by framing them in. Using a decorative corner piece means no mitered corners, making the job even easier. Finish them off with some handy caulking to finish off the look — get my tips for perfect caulking here

If you’re a color-lover like me and are struggling to keep your color selections to just a couple, scale back on size rather than quantity. Use a calming white, tan, or gray for the majority of the color (walls, bedding, etc) and then use smaller colorful pieces to bring in the color you love. Muted tones feel more tranquil, but if you love bold, go bold — just in small doses.

2. Think Circular

In the psychology of shapes, circles are calming. I’m not sure who does the science, but I think it works! 🙂 Keep the decor in the room simple but chic with a large round or oval frame layered with a starburst-style mirror over the headboard. This lotus mirror fits the bill without breaking the budget, or you can DIY a great honeycomb mirror following this tutorial from Thistlewood Farms

3. Comfort, Comfort, Comfort

Like I said, I believe that comfort is a universal requirement for a great bedroom environment. A comfy sitting chair is nice, but a comfy bed (like my awesome IntelliBed) with a few lush pillows and a soft but stylish headboard… That is the trifecta! And a chic upholstered headboard is an awesome DIY project. Check out all the different styles and tutorials we’ve featured on Remodelaholic here

4. Paint It

Thrift stores, Craigslist, and grandma’s attic are great places to find sturdy furniture that just needs a little love. If you’re not in the mood to totally strip and refinish a piece, chalk paint (like Annie Sloan or CeCe Caldwell… or homemade) doesn’t require any sanding before applying and gives a great smooth finish to any piece.

5. Love Your Bedding

This lace and ruffles bedset is romantic and dreamy, but if white and ruffled isn’t your style — choose something else! A solid color comforter or duvet with a little added texture like ruffles, ruching, pintucks, quilting or a subtle simple pattern keeps the calm feeling without becoming boring. We like these affordable and well-reviewed options on Amazon:

(also available in a dozen other colors!)

(also available in plum)
Greenland Home blue quilt, AmazonGreenland Home Quilt Set

6.  Build It

This wouldn’t be a Remodelaholic room tips without a building idea! The furniture feet sticking out from the ruffles of the bed set add a little class. Skip the bed ruffle and build and upholster a bed frame and headboard like Orange Sugar shared here, or keep it simpler by adding furniture legs to your box springs like Momma Rake did for a quick weekend bed update.

  1. Great tips!! It took me 8 months to find my new comforter which my husband actually liked. Once I had it, everything else was easier. My bedroom is still a work in progress, but it’s getting there.
